Information - Hospital in Wrocław

Dear Readers, every hospital stay raises a number of questions and doubts regarding the organisation and operation of the hospital. In order to help you prepare for hospitalisation, we present below some guidelines.

Before the hospitalisation:

  1. Make an appointment with a dentist – your teeth must be healthy before the procedure.
  2. Introduce a light, protein-rich diet: eat two eggs or fish or lean meat and milk products every day. Importantly, you need a lot of protein for tissue reconstruction after the surgery.
  3. If you have diabetes, stabilise your blood glucose levels; it is very important for the healing of the post-operative wound.
  4. Practise deep breathing (like blowing a candle) to strengthen chest muscle.
  5. Perform the following tests:
  • respiratory system: anterior-posterior lung X-ray valid for 3 months, spirometry;
  • heart: ECG, echocardiography, coronary angiography (on a CD) – not older than 6 months;
  • vascular system: Doppler ultrasound of carotid arteries;
  • laboratory tests: complete blood count, ionogram with CA++, urea, creatinine, AspAT, AlAT, glucose, bilirubin, cholesterol, CK-MB (in unstable patients), APTT, INR, CRP, OB, HIV, HBs, Ag, anti- HCV (obtained no more than 3 months before), blood type;
  • consultations: with a laryngological (in the case of upper respiratory infection), dentist (in the case of valvular defects), gastrologist (in the case of ulcer), neurologist (in the case of a neurological disease);
  • bacteriological test: current results of a nasal swab for MRSA (obtained no more than 3 months before);
  • vaccination against hepatitis B.

On the day of admission to the hospital

  1. On the day of admission, we are waiting for you between 7:30 and 11:00. On the ground floor, next to the registration desk, you will find the Admission Room. Having complete all the formalities, please come to the Department of Cardiac Surgery.
  2. You should take the following to the hospital:
    • medical records, including test results;
    • the medicines you use regularly;
    • a few sets of pyjamas, buttoned at the front, and underwear;
    • a dressing gown and slippers;
    • fresh towels and toiletries.
  3. Do not take to the hospital:
    • valuables;
    • large sums of money;
    • securities.
  4. Visiting hours:
    • Departments of Cardiac Surgery 10:00 - 19:00
    • Department of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery 10:00 - 19:00
    • Department of Rehabilitation 10:00 - 19:00
    • Departments of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy 15:00 - 19:00
  5. Entering a department disinfect your hands with the product from the dispenser on the wall, next to the entrance.
  6. We appreciate your understanding – one patient can have no more than two visitors at the same time.
  7. If you have cold, fever or you are sick, you should not come to the hospital. Infections are dangerous for post-surgical patients, so this group of patients must be particularly protected.
  8. If your close one shares the hospital room with another patient, please ask the personnel before entering if your visit will not disturb the therapeutic activities performed in the room.
  9. Do not bring food, especially large quantities of fruits, cheese or yoghurt that may go off. Never bring sweets, in particular for patients with diabetes. Unstable glucose levels impairs post-operative wound healing and causes suffering of your close ones.
  10. Please make sure the patient has a sufficient supply of clean underwear, pyjamas buttoned at the front (nightgowns are not comfortable), as wounds heal beast under clean underwear, so frequent changing of the pyjamas and underwear is very important.
  11. We respect your right information about your close one, but we are bound by patient confidentiality rules, so we do not provide information on the phone or to people who were not authorised by the patient. Information about the patient’s health status is given to the authorised individuals, during the visiting hours.

Food

Healthy and tasty – this is a rule we adopted in our hospital. Meals for patients are prepared by a company that provides specialised catering services, has the appropriate permits and certificates, hires dieticians and experienced cooks. We offer the highest quality products, prepared immediately before they are delivered to our patients. Patients usually get three meals a day. The menu is always prepared by dieticians. They make sure that the meals are varied and rich in the necessary nutrients. We offer our patients meals adjusted to their individual needs: normal diet, diet for diabetics, light diet, diet for patients with liver disorders, semi-liquid diet for diabetics, semi-liquid light diet, semi-liquid diet for patients with liver disorders, vegetarian meals and meals for our youngest patients, based on their age and nutritional needs. The parents and guardians staying with the patients, as well as the medical personnel can order meals from an additional menu prepared for a given week.
